Aussie Sunrise Lobophyllia Coral Care | The Happy Reef

Aussie Sunrise Lobophyllia is a colourful Australian LPS with the thick, fleshy tissue and deeply folded structure characteristic of Lobophyllia. The Sunrise name reflects its contrasting warm, bright colouration, which becomes particularly striking under blue-spectrum reef lighting.

Commonly shortened to "Lobo" in the reef hobby, Lobophyllia are often known as Lobed Brain Corals. As they grow, their valleys and ridges develop into substantial, heavily textured colonies, while the living tissue inflates to give them their characteristic full appearance.

Flow: Low to moderate. Gentle, indirect movement allows the fleshy polyps to expand fully.

Placement: Low Third to Sandbed

Feeding: Beneficial. Lobophyllia are photosynthetic but also respond extremely well to food. Mysis, finely chopped seafood and suitable LPS foods can be offered when their feeding tentacles are extended. Occasional target feeding can support strong growth and condition.

Care Notes: Give a Lobo some room from neighbouring corals as they are capable of a strong sting, particularly when feeding tentacles are extended. Stable alkalinity, calcium and magnesium, moderate lighting and occasional feeding provide excellent conditions for developing a large, colourful colony.
