Aztec Gem Chalice Coral Care | The Happy Reef

Aztec Gem Chalice is a colourful encrusting LPS coral grown for its contrasting colours and intricate pattern. "Chalice" is an aquarium trade term covering several different coral genera rather than one particular species, so named morphs such as Aztec Gem cannot reliably be identified to species from the trade name alone.

Chalices are particularly useful for bringing strong colour into the lower areas of a reef where many brighter-light corals would struggle. Once established, they gradually spread across the surrounding rockwork to form an increasingly impressive encrusting colony.

Scientific Name: Chalice coral – exact genus and species cannot reliably be determined from the trade name alone.

Flow: Low to moderate. Provide enough movement to keep debris from settling without continuously blasting the fleshy tissue.

Placement: Low Third

Feeding: Beneficial but not essential. Chalices obtain much of their energy through photosynthesis but will also capture small meaty foods and suitable coral foods. Occasional target feeding when the feeding tentacles are extended can encourage growth.

Care Notes: Allow plenty of space around the colony. Chalice corals can extend sweeper tentacles after dark and may sting neighbouring corals well beyond their daytime footprint. Stable alkalinity, calcium and magnesium support healthy skeletal growth. Acclimate gradually if moving the coral into substantially stronger lighting.
