Black Spot Foxface
Siganus unimaculatus
Origin: Western Pacific – Philippines, Indonesia, Japan
Size: Up to 24 cm
Reef Compatibility:
Diet: Herbivore – feeds on macroalgae, seaweed (nori), spirulina, and herbivore pellets; will also take some meaty foods.
Care Level: Moderate – hardy but requires a mature system with ample algae.
Aggression: Peaceful – generally calm, though may spar with other rabbitfish.
Captive-Bred Available: ❌ No
Notes:
The Black Spot Foxface is very similar to the One Spot Foxface but displays a distinct black blotch on its body. Venomous dorsal spines provide protection from predators, so caution is needed when handling. Requires plenty of swimming space and rockwork for grazing.
Why We Like It:
Hardy, active, and efficient at controlling nuisance algae, the Black Spot Foxface is both functional and beautiful. Its bold markings and constant grazing make it an excellent addition to larger reef systems.
