Niger Triggerfish

Odonus niger

The Niger Triggerfish, also known as the Redtooth Triggerfish, is a striking and highly active trigger with deep blue to purple colouration, contrasting fin margins and the distinctive red teeth that become increasingly obvious as the fish matures.

Unlike many triggerfish, Niger Triggers spend a considerable amount of time swimming in open water. In the wild they can form large groups above current-swept reefs, feeding primarily on zooplankton as well as other marine foods.

They are generally considered one of the less aggressive triggerfish, although they are still large, powerful fish and can become increasingly territorial as they mature. They are best housed with robust tank mates that will not be easily intimidated.

Niger Triggers will usually leave established corals alone, but they should not be considered completely reef safe. Shrimp, crabs, snails and other ornamental invertebrates may be viewed as food, particularly as the trigger grows.

Provide a large aquarium with plenty of open swimming space alongside substantial rockwork and caves. Triggerfish naturally wedge themselves into crevices when resting, so secure rockwork is particularly important.

Feed a varied diet including mysis, krill, chopped seafood and quality prepared marine foods. Larger individuals should also regularly receive suitably sized harder foods to encourage natural feeding behaviour.

Why We Like It

Niger Triggers have all the personality you expect from a triggerfish but with a much more open-water swimming style. Their colour can shift from almost black through rich blue and purple depending on the lighting, while those bright red teeth make larger specimens unmistakable.
