Burgess' Butterflyfish
Chaetodon burgessi
Burgess' Butterflyfish is a striking deep-water butterflyfish with a clean white body crossed by bold black diagonal bands. Its simple black-and-white pattern gives it a very different look from the brightly coloured butterflyfish more commonly seen in marine aquariums.
In the wild, this species is found around reef drop-offs, often in areas rich in gorgonians and black corals. It is usually encountered alone or in pairs and can occur considerably deeper than many commonly kept butterflyfish.
Burgess' Butterflyfish generally adapts well to aquarium life and will often accept a wide range of frozen and prepared marine foods once settled. Offer a varied diet including mysis, finely chopped seafood and quality frozen preparations several times throughout the day.
This species is not considered reliably reef safe. It may pick at corals, tubeworms and other sessile invertebrates, so it is best suited to a fish-only system or an aquarium where some coral feeding can be accepted.
Provide plenty of mature rockwork for shelter and grazing alongside open swimming space. They are generally peaceful towards unrelated fish, although newly introduced individuals can initially be shy.
Why We Like It
Burgess' Butterflyfish has a completely different look to most butterflyfish. The bold black-and-white pattern is incredibly clean, and its relatively small adult size makes it an interesting choice for experienced keepers wanting something less commonly seen.
