Chili & Lime Favia Coral Care | The Happy Reef

Chili & Lime Favia is a colourful encrusting LPS coral with contrasting warm and fluorescent tones. Corals sold in the hobby as "Favia" are worth a closer look: many Indo-Pacific corals historically labelled Favia have since been reclassified into other genera, particularly Dipsastraea. The old Favia name remains firmly established in the aquarium trade.

These are hardy, steadily growing LPS corals that can develop into substantial colonies with a distinctive honeycomb-like pattern of individual corallites. Their fluorescence can become particularly striking under blue-spectrum reef lighting.

Scientific Name: Commonly sold as Favia sp.; likely Dipsastraea sp. Exact species cannot reliably be determined from the trade name alone.

Flow: Low to moderate. Enough water movement to prevent debris accumulating between the corallites without directly blasting the colony.

Placement: Low Third to Mid Third

Feeding: Beneficial but not essential. Photosynthesis provides much of its energy, but individual polyps readily accept small meaty foods and suitable coral foods. Occasional target feeding when the feeding tentacles are extended can support faster growth.

Care Notes: Give this coral space from its neighbours. Favia-type corals can extend surprisingly long sweeper tentacles, particularly after dark, and are capable of a strong sting. Stable alkalinity, calcium and magnesium will support continued skeletal growth.
