Classic Bubble Coral Care | The Happy Reef
Classic Bubble Coral is one of the most recognisable LPS corals in the hobby. When fully expanded, Plerogyra sinuosa produces large, inflated bubble-like vesicles that can almost completely hide the skeleton beneath, giving the coral its distinctive soft and flowing appearance.
Those bubbles aren't just decorative. They are specialised extensions of the coral's tissue containing its photosynthetic zooxanthellae, helping provide the coral with energy from light. As lighting changes, a Bubble Coral can look dramatically different as its vesicles inflate and retract.
Scientific Name: Plerogyra sinuosa
PAR: 75?150
Flow: Low to moderate. Gentle, indirect flow allows the large bubbles to inflate fully and move naturally.
Placement: Low Third
Feeding: Beneficial. Bubble Corals are photosynthetic but also readily capture food. Occasional target feeding with mysis, finely chopped seafood or suitable LPS foods can support good growth and condition.
Care Notes: Give a Bubble Coral plenty of space to fully expand. Plerogyra can also extend long sweeper tentacles, particularly after dark, so allow some distance from neighbouring corals. Stable alkalinity, calcium and magnesium will support continued skeletal growth. Once settled, this is a fantastic LPS for adding both movement and an unusual texture to the lower areas of a reef.
