Copper Symphyllia Coral Care | The Happy Reef

Copper Symphyllia is a striking fleshy LPS with warm copper colouration running through its broad, winding valleys. When fully expanded, the thick tissue creates the deeply folded, brain-like appearance that makes these corals such impressive features in the lower areas of a reef.

The familiar Symphyllia name is still widely used in the aquarium trade, although the taxonomy has changed. Species formerly placed in Symphyllia are now classified within Lobophyllia. The old name has remained popular with reef keepers and is still useful for describing their distinctive shared-wall, meandering growth form.

Flow: Low to moderate. Gentle, indirect movement allows the fleshy tissue to expand fully.

Placement: Low Third to Sandbed

Feeding: Beneficial. These corals are photosynthetic but respond very well to occasional target feeding. Mysis, finely chopped seafood and suitable LPS foods can be offered when feeding tentacles are extended and can support strong growth and condition.

Care Notes: Give the coral some room from neighbouring corals as it is capable of a strong sting. Stable alkalinity, calcium and magnesium, moderate lighting and occasional feeding provide excellent conditions for developing a substantial, fleshy showpiece.
