Dragon Soul Favia Coral Care | The Happy Reef

Dragon Soul Favia is a striking LPS coral grown for its intense contrasting colours and fluorescent corallites. As it grows, it develops a tightly packed, textured appearance and can become a particularly impressive feature in the lower to middle areas of a reef.

The name "Favia" is still widely used in the aquarium trade, but coral taxonomy has moved on. Many Indo-Pacific corals historically sold as Favia have been reclassified, particularly into the genus Dipsastraea, so the familiar hobby name does not necessarily reflect the coral's current scientific classification.

Scientific Name: Commonly sold as Favia sp.; likely Dipsastraea sp. Exact species cannot reliably be determined from the trade name alone.

PAR: 75–150

Flow: Low to moderate. Aim for enough movement to keep detritus from collecting between the corallites without directly blasting the fleshy tissue.

Placement: Low Third to Mid Third

Feeding: Beneficial but not essential. The coral receives much of its energy through photosynthesis, but the individual polyps readily capture small meaty foods and suitable coral foods. Occasional target feeding when the feeding tentacles are extended can encourage growth.

Care Notes: Give the coral room to expand. Favia-type corals can extend sweeper tentacles after dark and are capable of a strong sting, so avoid placing other corals immediately alongside it. Maintain stable alkalinity, calcium and magnesium to support continued skeletal growth.
