A refugium provides a protected area where macroalgae such as Chaetomorpha can grow, absorbing nutrients as they develop. It can also offer shelter for copepods and other beneficial microorganisms, helping support a more diverse aquarium ecosystem.

We love finding ways to get more out of compact all-in-one aquariums. Space is limited in their rear filtration compartments, but that doesn't mean you have to miss out on the benefits of a refugium.

The First Wave Refugium offers an additional filtration option without needing a separate sump, making it a useful upgrade for reefkeepers interested in natural nutrient management and supporting copepod populations.

Care & Use

Rinse before installation and position securely within the compatible filtration compartment. Add suitable macroalgae and provide appropriate refugium lighting where required.

Harvest macroalgae periodically to export absorbed nutrients and prevent overcrowding. Ensure water can circulate freely and that the refugium does not restrict filtration flow or obstruct emergency overflow arrangements.

Good to Know

The effectiveness of a refugium depends on factors including macroalgae growth, lighting, water flow and nutrient availability. A compact refugium can provide useful additional habitat, but should not be considered a complete replacement for regular aquarium maintenance and appropriate filtration.
