Frogspawn
Type: LPS
Scientific Name: Fimbriaphyllia sp.
PAR: 100?200
Flow: Moderate, random flow
Placement: Mid Third
Description
Frogspawn is one of the classic flowing LPS corals, producing large fleshy polyps covered in distinctive multi-tipped tentacles. When fully extended these create the clustered, almost spawn-like appearance that gives the coral its common name, while constant movement in the flow makes even a relatively small colony look substantial.
Frogspawn were traditionally grouped with Torch and Hammer Corals in Euphyllia, but several species are now classified within Fimbriaphyllia. Without identifying the exact species, we list this one conservatively as Fimbriaphyllia sp.
Why We Like It
Frogspawn gives you loads of movement without needing to be a rare named morph. The branching heads quickly create a full, bushy appearance, and the unusual multi-tipped tentacles make it immediately distinguishable from both Hammers and Torches. A proper reef-tank classic.
Care Notes
Best kept with stable reef parameters, moderate lighting and varied flow that allows the polyps to gently sway. It is primarily photosynthetic but readily accepts suitable coral foods and small meaty foods, with occasional feeding helping to support growth and new head development.
