Green Acantho Coral Care | The Happy Reef
Green Acantho is a large, fleshy showpiece LPS with beautiful green colouration and an impressive ability to inflate. A settled Acantho can expand dramatically during the day, producing a thick, folded mantle that makes the coral appear considerably larger than the skeleton underneath.
Acanthos are solitary corals ? what looks like a huge mass of coral tissue is essentially one enormous polyp with a single central mouth. Acanthophyllia deshayesiana is one of the largest solitary corals regularly kept in reef aquariums, making mature specimens fantastic sandbed centrepieces.
Scientific Name: Acanthophyllia deshayesiana
PAR: 50?125
Flow: Low. Gentle, indirect movement allows the enormous fleshy mantle to inflate fully and show its natural shape.
Placement: Sandbed
Feeding: Beneficial. Acanthos are photosynthetic but are also impressive feeders. They readily accept mysis, finely chopped seafood and suitable LPS foods. Occasional target feeding can support excellent inflation, growth and condition, although smaller portions are preferable to feeding very large pieces.
Care Notes: Give an Acantho plenty of room to reach its full daytime size ? a healthy specimen can inflate far beyond the dimensions suggested by its skeleton. Moderate lighting, gentle flow, occasional feeding and stable alkalinity, calcium and magnesium provide excellent conditions for this spectacular LPS.
