Green Goniopora Coral Care | The Happy Reef

Green Goniopora is a vibrant, constantly moving LPS with long flower-like polyps and vivid green colouration. When fully extended, the individual polyps create a dense field of movement, with the fluorescent green becoming particularly striking under blue-spectrum reef lighting.

Goniopora were once considered notoriously difficult aquarium corals, but our understanding of their care has changed considerably. Good nutrition is a major part of that change: they respond extremely well to regular feeding and can become strong, fast-growing corals when provided with suitable food, stable water chemistry and appropriate light and flow.

Scientific Name: Goniopora sp.

PAR: 100?200

Flow: Moderate and varied. Enough flow to keep the extended polyps gently moving without continuously flattening them in one direction.

Placement: Low Third to Mid Third

Feeding: Recommended. Goniopora benefit greatly from regular feeding with fine particulate coral foods, zooplankton-sized foods and other appropriately sized suspended foods. Feeding earlier in the day, ideally before noon, can work particularly well with their natural feeding behaviour. Regular feeding can make a noticeable difference to growth, polyp extension and overall condition.

Care Notes: Modern reef keeping has turned Goniopora from a coral with a difficult reputation into an excellent long-term aquarium coral. Keep alkalinity and other major parameters stable, provide moderate light and varied flow, and make feeding part of the routine rather than treating it as an occasional extra. Under good conditions they can steadily grow into large, impressive colonies with exceptional polyp extension.
