Filamented Flasher Wrasse
Paracheilinus filamentosus
Origin: Indonesia (Flores, Sulawesi, surrounding regions)
Size: Up to 9 cm
Reef Compatibility:
Diet: Carnivore – feeds on zooplankton in the wild. In captivity, thrives on enriched brine shrimp, mysis, copepods, and quality frozen or prepared marine foods.
Care Level: Moderate – hardy once acclimated but sensitive to poor water quality. Requires a covered tank as it is a notorious jumper.
Aggression: Peaceful to semi-aggressive – best kept singly or in a harem (one male with several females). Males may display aggression toward other similar wrasses.
Captive-Bred Available: Rarely
Notes:
The Filamented Flasher Wrasse is named for the extended fin rays on males, which they “flash” during courtship or territorial displays. They are highly active, colourful, and thrive in aquariums with ample swimming space, live rock, and peaceful tankmates. A sand bed is not essential, but plenty of hiding spaces will help them feel secure.
Why We Like It:
During their flashing displays, males light up with electric reds, oranges, and blues – one of the most spectacular behaviours in reef fish. A true showpiece wrasse that brings constant movement and beauty to the reef aquarium.
