Holy Grail Frogspawn Coral Care | The Happy Reef

Holy Grail Frogspawn is a premium Euphyllia morph selected for its intense fluorescent colouration. The branching, multi-tipped tentacles characteristic of Frogspawn create constant movement in the aquarium, while Holy Grail specimens add particularly bright yellow-green and golden tones under blue-spectrum reef lighting.

Frogspawn gets its common name from the clusters of rounded tentacle tips, which were thought to resemble frogspawn. Although closely related to Hammer Corals, Frogspawn has its own distinctive tentacle structure and is now classified as Fimbriaphyllia rather than Euphyllia – although the old Euphyllia name remains widely used throughout the reef hobby.

Scientific Name: Fimbriaphyllia sp. (formerly Euphyllia; exact species cannot reliably be determined from the trade name alone)

PAR: 100–200

Flow: Moderate. Random, indirect flow that keeps the tentacles gently moving without continuously pushing them in one direction is ideal.

Placement: Mid Third

Feeding: Beneficial but not essential. Frogspawn is strongly photosynthetic but can capture small meaty foods and suitable coral foods. Occasional feeding can support faster growth and the development of additional heads.

Care Notes: Frogspawn can develop into a substantial, flowing colony as new heads form and divide. Give it some space from unrelated neighbouring corals because its tentacles carry a strong sting. Stable alkalinity, calcium and magnesium, moderate lighting and varied flow provide excellent conditions for strong growth and intense colour.
