Japanese Deepwater Long Polyp Toadstool

Type: Soft Coral Scientific Name: Sarcophyton sp. PAR: 75–200 Flow: Moderate Placement: Lower–Upper

The Japanese Deepwater Long Polyp Toadstool is an unusual and highly sought-after Sarcophyton, combining incredibly long, flowing polyps with an intense fluorescent green colour. Under reef lighting the extended polyps absolutely glow, creating a mass of bright green movement above the contrasting leather base.

Unlike the shorter, fuzzier polyp extension of a typical toadstool, these develop exceptionally long polyps that sway freely in the flow. As the colony grows, the effect becomes increasingly dramatic and gives it an appearance closer to a flowing LPS than the leather coral it actually is.

Why We Like It

This is nothing like the ordinary brown and beige toadstools most reefkeepers picture when they think of leather corals. The combination of vivid green fluorescence, extraordinary polyp length and constant movement makes it a genuine showpiece — while still giving you the hardiness and adaptability that make Sarcophyton such great aquarium corals.
