Jewel Lobo Coral Care | The Happy Reef

Jewel Lobo is a colourful, fleshy LPS coral with the large inflated polyps and deep folds characteristic of Lobophyllia. Commonly shortened to "Lobo" in the reef hobby, these corals can develop into substantial colonies with bold patterns and contrasting colours that become particularly striking under blue-spectrum reef lighting.

Lobophyllia are often called Lobed Brain Corals because of the valleys and ridges formed as the colony grows. Their thick living tissue can expand well beyond the underlying skeleton, giving a healthy specimen a much fuller appearance once settled.

Flow: Low to moderate. Gentle, indirect movement is ideal. Avoid strong direct flow that continuously pushes the fleshy tissue against its skeleton.

Placement: Low Third to Sandbed

Feeding: Beneficial. Lobos are photosynthetic but are also enthusiastic feeders. They readily accept mysis, finely chopped seafood and suitable LPS foods when their feeding tentacles are extended. Occasional target feeding can support growth and condition.

Care Notes: Give a Lobo plenty of room. Lobophyllia can be aggressive towards neighbouring corals and are capable of a strong sting. Their thick tissue is also vulnerable to damage from sharp rockwork, so choose a position where the coral can fully inflate without rubbing against surrounding surfaces. Stable alkalinity, calcium and magnesium will support continued skeletal growth.
