Description

Lava Lamp Discosoma is a colourful mushroom coral with contrasting, irregular patterning that gives the surface a swirling, almost liquid appearance ? hence the Lava Lamp name. The smooth fleshy disc can expand considerably when settled, displaying the pattern across the entire surface.

Discosoma are corallimorphs rather than stony corals. They're close relatives of reef-building corals but don't produce a hard calcium carbonate skeleton, leaving the entire animal soft, flexible and able to change shape dramatically as it expands and contracts.

Why We Like It

The pattern is what makes this one. Rather than being a single block of colour, every mushroom has its own irregular mix and distribution, giving it much more character when viewed up close. They're also compact, easy to place and look brilliant grouped into a colourful mushroom garden.

Care Notes

A hardy, photosynthetic mushroom that generally prefers lower light and gentler flow. Direct feeding isn't required, although it can make use of fine suspended foods. Once established, Discosoma can reproduce and gradually form a larger colony around the original mushroom.
