Lavender Trachyphyllia Coral Care | The Happy Reef

Lavender Trachyphyllia is a beautiful open brain coral selected for its softer lavender and purple colouration. When fully settled, a Trachyphyllia can inflate dramatically, producing a large fleshy mantle that makes it an impressive feature on the sandbed.

Trachyphyllia is a free-living LPS coral rather than an encrusting species. In the wild it is typically found resting on soft substrates, so the sandbed is its natural position in a reef aquarium. Placing one amongst sharp rockwork can damage its delicate tissue as the coral repeatedly inflates and contracts.

Flow: Low to moderate. Gentle, indirect water movement is ideal. Avoid strong direct flow that prevents the fleshy mantle from expanding naturally.

Placement: Sandbed

Feeding: Beneficial. Although photosynthetic, Trachyphyllia are enthusiastic feeders and can accept surprisingly substantial foods. Occasional target feeding with mysis, finely chopped seafood or suitable LPS foods can support growth and condition. Feed when the coral shows a feeding response rather than forcing food into a closed mouth.

Care Notes: Give the coral plenty of room to inflate and keep sharp rockwork away from its fleshy mantle. Healthy specimens can expand considerably during the day and retract dramatically after lights
