Midnight Clownfish
Scientific Name: Amphiprion ocellaris
Origin: Captive Bred
Maximum Size: Around 11 cm
Temperament: Peaceful to Semi-aggressive
Reef Safe: Yes
Care Level: Easy
Description
The Midnight Clownfish is a striking designer form of the familiar Ocellaris Clownfish. Instead of the classic orange body and three white bands, Midnight Clowns develop an almost completely black body with no white stripes at all.
Young fish can retain some orange colouration, particularly around the face, which gradually darkens as they mature. Some adults become completely black, while others retain a small amount of orange around the face, giving individual fish slightly different appearances. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}
Despite the dramatic colour difference, their care and behaviour are essentially the same as other Amphiprion ocellaris. They are hardy, adaptable and one of the easiest marine fish to keep, making them suitable for both newer reef keepers and established aquariums.
Feeding
Midnight Clownfish are omnivorous and readily accept a wide range of aquarium foods. Feed a varied diet of quality marine pellets or flakes alongside frozen mysis, enriched brine shrimp and other appropriately sized meaty foods.
Captive-bred specimens are normally confident feeders and adapt very quickly to aquarium life.
Compatibility
Midnight Clownfish are completely reef safe and can be kept with corals and ornamental invertebrates.
They can be kept individually or as a compatible pair. Like all clownfish, an established pair may become territorial around their chosen area, particularly once spawning, but Ocellaris are generally amongst the less aggressive clownfish species. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}
An anemone is not required to keep clownfish successfully. They may choose to host in an anemone if one is available, but they can live perfectly happily without one.
Why We Like It
The Midnight takes one of the easiest and most recognisable marine fish and gives it a completely different look. The solid black body is incredibly clean and really stands out against bright reef lighting and colourful corals.
They also keep everything that makes Ocellaris Clownfish so popular: they stay relatively small, are hardy, readily accept prepared foods and are packed with personality.
