Nyos Nitrate Minus

What It Is

Nyos Nitrate Minus is a carbon source designed to encourage the growth of beneficial bacteria that naturally consume nitrate and phosphate within reef aquariums. As these bacterial populations grow, they incorporate nutrients into their biomass, allowing them to be exported through protein skimming and normal filtration processes.

Why We Like It

There are many ways to lower nutrients, but carbon dosing remains one of the most effective methods for heavily stocked reef aquariums. Rather than chemically removing nitrate, Nitrate Minus works with the aquarium's natural biology by providing the fuel beneficial bacteria need to multiply and consume excess nutrients.

It's particularly useful where nitrate is persistently elevated despite good husbandry, regular maintenance and adequate filtration. As bacterial populations increase, many reefkeepers find nutrient control becomes more predictable and easier to maintain long term.

As with any carbon source, gradual dosing and regular testing are important to avoid reducing nutrients too quickly.
