The Orange Ringed Goby is one of the most unusual sleeper gobies we've encountered. While imported under the name Valenciennea cf. puellaris, its appearance differs significantly from the recognised Valenciennea species commonly seen in the marine aquarium trade.
Its deeper body, larger adult size and striking orange ring-shaped markings set it apart from the classic Diamond Watchman Goby and other described species that it has been compared with. Although it clearly belongs within the Valenciennea genus, its precise species identity remains uncertain, making it a fascinating fish for hobbyists who appreciate the rarer and more unusual side of reef keeping.
Like other sleeper gobies, it spends much of the day sifting sand in search of tiny invertebrates, helping to aerate the substrate while displaying natural and engaging behaviour. A mature sand bed, secure rockwork and a varied diet of frozen foods and quality marine pellets will help it thrive.
Whether this fish represents an uncommon regional form or a species that has yet to be formally resolved, the Orange Ringed Goby is a truly distinctive addition to any peaceful marine aquarium.
