Description

Pulsing Xenia is one of the most instantly recognisable soft corals, with feathery polyps that repeatedly open and close in a rhythmic pulsing motion. Unlike most coral movement, this isn't simply caused by water flow ? the coral actively pulses its own polyps.

The exact reason for pulsing has been studied for years, with research suggesting the movement helps improve gas exchange and photosynthesis around the colony. Whatever the reason, the result is a coral that looks genuinely alive and active even when the pumps aren't providing much movement.

Why We Like It

Few corals are as much fun to watch. The constant pulsing makes Xenia completely different from almost anything else in a reef tank, and it's particularly satisfying for someone buying their first corals because the movement is so obvious. Give it good conditions and it can quickly develop into a waving, pulsing colony.

Care Notes

A fast-growing and generally forgiving soft coral that doesn't require direct feeding. Xenia can spread readily by growing across neighbouring rockwork, so placing it on its own rock or an area where its growth can be managed makes it easy to keep the colony where you want it.
