Purple Tang
Zebrasoma xanthurum
Origin: Red Sea and Gulf of Aden
Size: Up to 25 cm
Reef Compatibility:
Diet: Herbivore – primarily grazes on algae; accepts nori, pellets, and frozen herbivore blends.
Care Level: Moderate to Difficult – requires stable water quality and plenty of swimming space.
Aggression: Semi-aggressive – can be territorial, especially toward other tangs and similar-shaped fish.
Captive-Bred Available: ❌ No
Notes:
The Purple Tang is one of the most striking surgeonfish available, instantly recognisable by its deep violet body and contrasting yellow tail. Native to the Red Sea, this species thrives in large, mature reef aquariums with plenty of open swimming space and established rockwork for grazing. Like other tangs, it may show aggression toward conspecifics or similar-shaped tangs, so careful tankmate selection is essential. A tight-fitting lid is advised, as they may occasionally jump when startled.
Why We Like It:
Bold in both colour and personality, the Purple Tang is a true showpiece fish. Not only does it bring vibrant contrast to the reef, but it also serves a practical role by constantly grazing on algae, helping to maintain a balanced ecosystem.
