Purple Tip Elegance Coral Care | The Happy Reef

Purple Tip Elegance Coral is a spectacular fleshy LPS with long, flowing tentacles finished with contrasting purple tips. When fully expanded, an Elegance can become dramatically larger than its skeleton and provides an impressive amount of movement in the lower areas of a reef aquarium.

Catalaphyllia jardinei is naturally associated with softer, silty and sandy substrates rather than exposed high-energy reef tops. This makes the sandbed an excellent aquarium position and helps explain its preference for moderate lighting and relatively gentle water movement.

Flow: Low to moderate. Gentle, indirect movement should allow the tentacles to sway naturally without continuously pushing the fleshy mantle against its skeleton.

Placement: Sandbed

Feeding: Beneficial. Elegance corals are photosynthetic but also capable feeders. They readily accept mysis, finely chopped seafood and suitable LPS foods. Occasional feeding can support growth and condition, but avoid repeatedly feeding excessively large pieces.

Care Notes: Give an Elegance plenty of space. Its long tentacles possess a strong sting and the coral can expand considerably beyond the footprint of its skeleton. Keep sharp rockwork away from the fleshy mantle, maintain stable alkalinity, calcium and magnesium, and acclimate gradually if moving it into substantially brighter lighting.
