Rainbow Lobophyllia Coral Care | The Happy Reef

Rainbow Lobophyllia is a spectacular fleshy LPS selected for its mix of contrasting colours across the coral's deep folds and valleys. Rainbow Lobos are particularly impressive once fully expanded, when their thick tissue brings the different colours together into a large, highly textured showpiece.

Commonly shortened to "Lobo" in the reef hobby, Lobophyllia are often known as Lobed Brain Corals. Their characteristic ridges and valleys become increasingly pronounced as they grow, eventually producing substantial colonies that can become a major feature of the reef.

Flow: Low to moderate. Gentle, indirect movement allows the fleshy tissue to remain fully expanded.

Placement: Low Third to Sandbed

Feeding: Beneficial. Lobophyllia are photosynthetic but also respond very well to target feeding. Mysis, finely chopped seafood and suitable LPS foods can be offered when their feeding tentacles are extended. Occasional feeding can support strong growth and condition.

Care Notes: Give a Lobo some room from neighbouring corals as it is capable of a strong sting. Stable alkalinity, calcium and magnesium, moderate lighting and occasional feeding provide excellent conditions for developing a large, colourful and impressive colony.
