Description

Red Watermelon Discosoma is a brightly coloured mushroom coral combining rich red tones with contrasting green colouration reminiscent of a sliced watermelon. When fully expanded, the soft disc displays its colour across a broad surface, creating a vivid patch of colour against the surrounding rockwork.

Discosoma are corallimorphs rather than stony corals. They're close relatives of reef-building corals but don't produce a hard skeleton, allowing the entire animal to remain soft and dramatically expand and contract throughout the day.

Why We Like It

Red and green is a brilliant combination under reef lighting, and the simple shape of a Discosoma really lets the colour do the work. They're compact, easy to place and look even better as they multiply into a colourful mushroom garden.

Care Notes

A hardy, photosynthetic mushroom that generally prefers lower light and gentler flow. Direct feeding isn't required, although it can make use of fine suspended foods. Established Discosoma can reproduce readily and gradually develop into a larger colony.
