Toxic Mouth Frogspawn Coral Care | The Happy Reef

Toxic Mouth Frogspawn is a colourful branching Frogspawn selected for the intense fluorescent colour around its mouth, contrasting against its flowing tentacles. Under blue-spectrum reef lighting the centre can appear almost illuminated, while the multi-tipped tentacles provide the movement that makes Frogspawn such a popular LPS coral.

Frogspawn gets its common name from the clusters of rounded tentacle tips, which were thought to resemble frogspawn. Although still commonly referred to as Euphyllia in the reef hobby, Frogspawn corals have been moved into the genus Fimbriaphyllia alongside Hammer Corals.

Scientific Name: Fimbriaphyllia sp. (formerly Euphyllia; exact species cannot reliably be determined from the trade name alone)

PAR: 100?200

Flow: Moderate. Random, indirect flow that keeps the tentacles gently moving rather than continuously pushed in one direction is ideal.

Placement: Mid Third

Feeding: Beneficial but not essential. Frogspawn is strongly photosynthetic but can capture small meaty foods and suitable coral foods. Occasional feeding can support faster growth and the development of additional heads.

Care Notes: Frogspawn can develop into a substantial flowing colony as individual heads grow and divide. Give it some space from unrelated neighbouring corals due to its strong sting. Stable alkalinity, calcium and magnesium, moderate lighting and varied flow provide excellent conditions for strong growth, full extension and vibrant colour.
