Trochus Snail
Trochus snails are a reef keeper’s best friend when it comes to controlling unwanted algae. Their smooth, spiral shells and ability to self-right if they fall make them a standout choice compared to other snails like Astreas. Active and efficient, they spend their time grazing on rockwork, glass, and even powerheads. They’re peaceful, hardy, and rarely bother corals or other tankmates. Unlike some snails, Trochus can survive a wide range of reef conditions, making them a staple in most clean-up crews. Occasional in-tank breeding is possible, with tiny Trochus sometimes seen on the glass at night.
- Specific Name: Trochus spp.
- Diet: Herbivore – grazes on film algae, diatoms, and soft green algae
- Pest or Good Guy: ✅ Good Guy
- Size: Typically 2–4 cm
- Breed in Captivity: Occasionally – will spawn in reef tanks but larvae rarely survive to adulthood without specialized care
- Cautions: Can be bulldozers in small tanks; like most snails, sensitive to sudden salinity swings
