Tuxedo Urchin
* Scientific name: Mespilia globulus
* Origin: Indo-Pacific
* Diet: Algae grazer
* Pest or good guy: Good guy
* Size: Around 5–8 cm
* Breeds in captivity: No, not realistically in home aquariums
* Reef safe: Yes
* Fish safe: Yes
* Coral safe: Yes, but may carry loose frags or small items
The Tuxedo Urchin is one of the best-looking algae grazers for a reef tank. It stays relatively small, has bold blue and red/orange patterning, and spends its day slowly working across rockwork and glass picking at algae.
Why We Like It
Tuxedo Urchins are useful without being ugly. They are excellent for film algae and short nuisance algae, and they add proper movement and character to a clean-up crew. They can sometimes pick up shells, rubble, or unsecured frags as camouflage, so anything valuable should be glued down properly.
