Clown Wrasse
Scientific Name: Coris aygula
Small Fish Safe: No – will eat smaller fish
Invert Safe: No – predatory on snails, shrimp, and crabs
Coral Safe: Yes – does not typically nip at coral
Adult Size: Up to 120 cm (commonly 30–50 cm in captivity)
Diet: Carnivore – feeds on frozen meaty foods, live inverts, and shelled prey
Why We Like It:
The Clown Wrasse is a bold, fast-growing species that transitions into a powerful predator with deep blues and greens and a commanding presence. It requires a very large tank with sandbed for sleeping and open space for swimming. Best kept in predator or FOWLR systems with robust tankmates. Not suitable for reef tanks with inverts, but makes a dramatic and rewarding centrepiece in the right setup.
