Ultra Bleeding Apple Scoly Coral Care | The Happy Reef

Ultra Bleeding Apple Scoly is a spectacular fleshy LPS selected for the intense red and green colour combination that gives the classic "Bleeding Apple" morph its name. When fully inflated, the thick mantle expands over the skeleton to create the rounded, almost doughnut-like appearance that makes Scolys such sought-after showpiece corals.

There's also an interesting story behind the familiar name. The Australian corals reef keepers still commonly call "Scolys" are no longer classified as Scolymia. They were reclassified as Homophyllia australis, but the old Scoly name remains firmly established throughout the reef hobby.

Scientific Name: Homophyllia australis (formerly Scolymia australis)

PAR: 50?125

Flow: Low to moderate. Gentle, indirect movement allows the fleshy mantle to remain fully inflated.

Placement: Sandbed

Feeding: Beneficial. Scolys are photosynthetic but are also enthusiastic feeders. Occasional target feeding with mysis, finely chopped seafood or suitable LPS foods can support excellent inflation, growth and condition. Their feeding response can be surprisingly impressive for a coral that spends most of the day looking completely stationary.

Care Notes: Scolys thrive with stable reef parameters, moderate lighting and occasional feeding. Their relatively compact growth and incredible colour make them ideal for creating a standout feature on the sandbed. Stable alkalinity, calcium and magnesium will support continued skeletal growth.
