XXL Bubble Coral Care | The Happy Reef
XXL Bubble Coral is a genuinely huge Plerogyra and an impressive centrepiece coral. When fully expanded, its skeleton becomes covered by the enormous inflated vesicles ? the "bubbles" that give this species its familiar common name.
This particular specimen is especially interesting because it is currently dividing. It now has two distinct mouths, with the tissue between them gradually developing into a division. We first noticed an unusually large central bubble in this area, which is now changing as the dividing area develops smaller bubble-like vesicles similar to those around the outer edge. It gives us a fantastic opportunity to watch the growth and division of a mature Bubble Coral happening in real time.
Scientific Name: Plerogyra sinuosa
PAR: 75?150
Flow: Low to moderate. Gentle, indirect movement allows the large bubbles to inflate fully and gives the coral its characteristic movement.
Placement: Low Third
Feeding: Beneficial. Bubble Corals are photosynthetic but are also capable feeders. Occasional target feeding with mysis, finely chopped seafood or suitable LPS foods can support growth and condition.
Care Notes: Give this one plenty of room ? partly because this is an exceptionally large specimen, but also because Plerogyra can extend sweeper tentacles well beyond its inflated daytime footprint. Stable alkalinity, calcium and magnesium support continued skeletal growth. With two distinct mouths and division already underway, this is an unusually interesting specimen to watch continue developing.
