Fish FAQ
On arrival we take skin and gill scrapes of 10% of fish.
This is microscoped in our lab for signs of parasite infection in the gills, slime coat, scales or skin of the fish.
If fish are clear they undertake a 2 week quarantine with species appropriate treatment such as freshwater dips, copper prophylaxis and other treatments.
If fish pass this stage we repeat gill and skin scrapes on a further 10% of fish before slowly moving them to our retail display tanks.
We take the community display approach to retail holding of most of our fish.
Fish are kept in larger community tanks that allow free swimming with adequate cover and hiding spaces.
We ensure that decoration and tank sizes are the right compromise between natural habitat and stress free netting on sale.
Our fish communities are carefully chosen to ensure fish are stocked by niche and that stress is reduced by the presence of a happy and healthy community, a sign often used by reef fish that no predators are in the area.
Fish think: I am alone = everyone else got eaten
Of course for some of our species, they dont like sharing and so we keep them appropriately
We feed fish according to their needs but broadly:
Community Fish (i.e clownfish): Vitalis marine pellet, Red Plankton, Mysis, Brine shrimp & Krill pacifica at 4 small feeds per day
Herbivores (i.e Tangs): In addition receive a mixture of red, purple and green 'nori' seaweeds to graze through the day
Predator (Lionfish): Initially receive live feeder shrimp that have been enriched/gut loaded. We aim to wean these species onto frozen food alternatives but this is not always successful
Planktivores (i.e Mandarins): We maintain a supply of copepods bred inhouse. We use these to support planktivores such as mandarins, garden eels and copperbands.
We feed planktivorous fish, NYOS Goldpods as part of our training towards Frozen foods. Most of our fish are on frozen food by time they reach our retail displays
Fish welfare is our main priority.
Fish are only shipped to arrive wednesday, Thursday or Friday.
You must be in for your scheduled delivery slot as the courier will not reattempt delivery as it is not in the animals welfare interest to wait longer in the container.
All DOA's must be reported within 1 hour with photographs whereupon full credit to the value of the DOA will be given.
Reports must be timely with photographs as DOA's are extremely rare and each is investigated in full to prevent reoccurances
